The Vitz: Paraguay's best-seller
The Toyota Vitz is the car with the most active listings on Carzona. Built in Japan from 1999 to 2019, it's sold outside Japan as the Toyota Yaris.
It went through three generations: XP10 (1999-2004), XP90 (2005-2010) and XP130 (2010-2019). Its 1KR-FE 1.0-litre engine won Engine of the Year in its category four years running, 2007-2010.
In Paraguay you'll find 1.0L, 1.3L and 1.5L variants, almost all with CVT automatic. It's the king of used Japanese hatchbacks here.
The IST: the compact with SUV vibes
The Toyota IST was built in Japan from 2002 to 2016 across two generations. In Europe it sold as the Toyota Urban Cruiser from 2008 to 2014.
Toyota positioned it as a multi-purpose compact with SUV styling and wagon-like interior room. Taller than the Vitz, with a higher roof and elevated driving position.
On Carzona the IST has around 450 active listings, the third most-listed model on our market. Almost always automatic.
The real differences
- Size: the IST is noticeably bigger than the Vitz, especially in height and rear-seat space. To haul adults in back, IST wins.
- Fuel: the Vitz 1.0L is the most efficient of the two. The IST uses a bit more but compensates with more torque.
- Driving position: the IST feels taller, almost crossover-like. The Vitz sits lower and feels nimbler in town.
- Availability: almost twice as many Vitz on the Paraguayan market. More supply means more negotiating power.
- Parts: both are Toyota with easy parts, but the Vitz/Yaris has the widest parts network in Paraguay.
Which one fits what
- For one or two passengers, tight parking and minimum fuel use: Vitz.
- For small family or adult rear passengers regularly: IST.
- To maximise resale and supply when you sell: Vitz.
- For a softer SUV feel without going up to Tucson or Sportage: IST.
What to check before you buy
- 01CVT transmission: test it on an incline and from a stop with AC on. Make sure it pulls smoothly.
- 02Oil and filters: if the owner has no recent service history, plan a full service in the first month.
- 03Electrics: on imported cars, make sure ABS, airbags and lights all work and have been homologated.
- 04Steering alignment: if the wheel sits crooked when driving straight, the suspension or steering was likely hit.
